The occult detective's recognizable suit and trench coat first graced the pages of DC's Hellblazer comics and later became the iconic outfit of Castiel in Supernatural. If audiences feel that Castiel's ensemble is strangely familiar, that's because it is heavily inspired by DC comics' John Constantine. Even their tie colors, black for Constantine and blue for Castiel represent the different places from which they come.
Furthermore, Constantine is firmly rooted in the occult whereas Castiel originates from heaven as an angel, putting a definite divide between them. While DC's Hellblazer seems to scorch his own path through life, Castiel spends much of his time around Supernatural's Sam and Dean and at times relies on them for aid despite his angelic power.
Then again, the differences between Constantine and Castiel cannot be ignored either.
